Some of you will probably be quite unaware that I organised an outing to the Workhouse at Southwell Nottinghamshire on 19th August. Arrangements were made at very short notice and only after a chance conversation with Pauline Pedersen at the BMI in March. Sadly by the time I was able to settle details, it was too late for the June journal, for which I apologise, and by the time you will be reading the September issue, or this, it is all done and gone. I could only notify those who are on my email circulation list. However if you are disappointed to find you have missed an outing that you would like to have taken part in, then I will if there is sufficient interest arrange a repeat visit for 2018. The Workhouse is the only surviving complete workhouse in the country and we have probably all had an ancestor who at one time was an inmate of one. At Southwell you can see the sort of thing your ancestors had to put up with. It is a National Trust property so NT members had free entry to it, the only cost then being that of the coach seat. A coach seat was £20-00, Workhouse entry with Group Discount was £8-20. This atmospheric workhouse has a website where you can see what is on offer – Workhouse The day out included a visit to Southwell Minster. There are some excellent stone carvings to be seen at The Minster, see here for details of the entire cathedral.
There was an excellent turnout and I thank all. A number brought with them their own picnics, as suggested by the Workhouse Guardians, Bread and Cheese for Paupers, Cucumber Sandwiches and Scotch Eggs for Posh Folk. An excellent day out and with fine weather. A few came away with produce from the Workhouse Gardens, beans, potatoes etc. Thank you for your support.
