TNA are once again accepting Group Visits and I have been able fix some dates for 2023.
For 2023 Midland Ancestors has a schedule of trips to The National Archives in London, all comers welcome. Dates below are now booked at TNA but we shall review the level of interest through the year. There needs to be enough people joining in to warrant it.
Dates can also be seen in the Calendar, use the Events Dropdown above
- 18th March – Cancelled due to lack of interest.
- 20th May – Cancelled due to lack of interest – Sadly Again.
- 9th Sept – more here.
- 14th October – more here.
Our National Archives trips are always on Saturdays.
Coach seats are £26.00
We look forward to the usual regulars travelling and welcome all new researchers. You are not required to be a Group Member to join these trips, your interest may be local history, U3A, Friends of Archives, we welcome all. For the trip(s) shown above, or suggestions for any other places, please contact Phil the organiser here coachtrips@midanc.uk
You can get reminders from me about 6 – 8 weeks before any outing but only if you are on my circulation list. No one just appears on it, only those folks who give their consent. Get in touch if you want to be on the list.
The National Archives Familiarisation Sessions
Intended for first timers and those who have been to TNA perhaps once and felt they have not had the best from it, there are available two TNA introductory Sessions at the BMI. Learn how to be un-daunted by the TNA Discovery search engine.
- 18th February – Cancelled – new date TBA
- 29th July – more details here
Not 15th Feb and 25th July as shown in the Dec 22 journal – Organisers Mistook
The National Archives is the final resting place of all files and documents created by the various departments of H.M. Government and its predecessors. On more than 100 miles of shelving there can be found 11 million+ documents, your ancestor is very likely in there somewhere. Bear in mind only about 5% of these files have been digitised and published via pay per view websites. There is only one way to see any of the other 95%, and that is you have to go there !
On the National Archives home page you will see many recent updates, particularly to show visitor rules and floor plans. There are some changes concerning Readers Tickets, when they need to be used and how to obtain one. For more information about TNA open up a new Tab here
A Readers Ticket can be applied for on-line before your visit, but you can only get physical possession of it in person. A photograph of you (taken by them) is imprinted upon the Readers Ticket. Initially a short on-line tutorial covering document handling information needs to be completed. You can open a new Tab for the TNA website here and see specific information about Reader Tickets.
Trip booking lists open 8 weeks prior. Booking Forms can be found in The Midland Ancestor, you may photocopy it to keep your magazine complete if you wish. Alternatively I can send one in pdf format by email for you to print, please email me coachtrips@midanc.uk
Coach pickup points and times can be found here
You can also use the coach to take you to Kew Gardens, or any other of the attractions hereabouts. See more info under the points and times link above.
