The Midland Ancestor journal

There are four issues each year, with articles covering a wide range of topics.

Keep up to date with what’s going on in family history at local, national and international level.

Learn about the latest resources. Read about other members’ research experiences.

Family History Centre and Libraries

Our Family History Centre and Libraries are close to the excellent reference collections in the Library of Birmingham. They are based in the Birmingham and Midland Institute, Margaret Street , Birmingham. Directions here

The Family History Centre is open on most weekdays. Books and other holdings may not be borrowed.

The Lending Library is open for borrowing before each of our monthly meetings held at the BMI. Alternatively, UK members may borrow books and journals by post.

More library information here.

Search Services

We maintain and continue to build Baptism, Marriage and Burial Indexes for Birmingham, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. ( Birmingham is treated separately from Warwickshire in this context simply because it is so large). We have a variety of other specialist indexes, such as cemetery interment registers, monumental inscriptions, wills & probate, and poor law. These are shown on the Search Services pages.

The Link Scheme

Getting help for ‘look-ups’ at distant County Record Offices. This is a voluntary exchange service which depends upon the co-operative efforts of members who undertake to carry out simple research at record offices local to them in exchange for similar research being undertaken on their behalf at another record office. The exchange does not have to be direct. It is not unusual for A to research for B who researches for C who researches for A, and so on. Many of our overseas members have received help through this service.   More details here

Publications List

A full listing of the Society’s publications can be viewed via our online shop, together with a selection of more general publications. If there is any publication that is not listed, please contact our Bookshop Manager who may be able to obtain copies.
