In Memoriam – Records Of Commemoration

Presenter Doreen Hopwood

As family historians, we follow our ancestors from the cradle to the grave and this presentation explores the many ways in which the memory of our ancestors has been kept alive.  It explains how to locate their final resting places and discusses the changes in funeral and mourning practices as well as the iconography of gravestones and memorial inscriptions.  It includes records generated by the Church, State and organisations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and shows how Britons who died abroad may have been memorialised in this country.

Doreen will be known to many West Midland members having been the genealogist for Birmingham City Council for over twenty years and a tutor in family, community and social history at all levels. She takes a particular joy in her role for family history publications as a genealogical “agony aunt” answering reader’s questions and helping them to break down their brick walls.

This will be a Zoom Hybrid Meeting taking place in the Birmingham meeting Rooms and virtually.

A Registration Link will appear here soon.

Visit this page to find out how we do it.

Note this is the time of year when we change from Wednesdays to Saturdays
