In November 1899 during the Second Boer War, a 25-year old Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was working as a war correspondent for the Morning Post. He was captured after Boers ambushed a British armoured train in South Africa and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Pretoria. He staged a bold escape that would carry him some 300 miles through hostile territory to safety.
