TANWORTH-IN-ARDEN

The village is about nine miles south of Birmingham and just over a mile east of the Birmingham to Alcester road. The manor was given to Henry de Newburgh, Earl of Warwick by William the Conqueror, and it continued in the possession of the family until 1471. Umberslade Hall belonged to the Archer family. Tanworth has an active Village Preservation Society. Place names within the parish boundary are Earls Wood, Forshaw Heath, Monks Path (or Monks Riding), Portway, Salter Street, Shirley Heath, Tanzy Green, Traps Green and Umberslade.
