SOUTHAM

This small market town lies about ten miles north east of Warwick on the main road to Daventry and Northampton. The Royal Mail coaches from Warwick to London would stop at Southam which has some interesting old coaching inns. Charles I slept there two days before the battle of Edgehill. A hiring fair was held at various intervals, and men seeking employment would stand in the market place with symbols of their trades displayed in their hats, or carrying some tool of their trade.
