ETTINGTON

Ettington (sometimes written as Eatington) lies about five miles due south east of Stratford-upon-Avon, just north of the Roman Fosse Way. It was originally a Saxon village, later known as Upper Eatington. There were stone quarries in the lower part of the parish. Dr William Croft, renowned as a composer of sacred music, was born there in 1677, becoming organist of Westminster Abbey. There was a Quaker Meeting in Ettington with registers starting in 1664. The Meeting House built in 1684 still remains. The Shirley family were lords of the manor when the Domesday Survey was made. Fulready, Lambcote and Thornton were hamlets.
