SUMMARY:Birmingham Hybrid: Group AGM followed by Lunatick Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Lunatick Astronomy\nPresenter Andrew Lound\nThe Lunar Society was one of the most influential groups in the 18th century\, no aspect of science and industry was overlooked at their monthly dinner parties. Although the development of the steam engine and coinage production became the main focus for Matthew Boulton\, he had developed a passion for astronomy. Andrew will tell us the story of the Lunar Society’s interest in astronomy based on new research that has revealed some surprising facts! \nA dramatic presentation beautifully illustrated and accompanied by music and presented with 18th Century flair! You won’t want to miss this one. \nAndrew is well known local speaker and commentator and has appeared numerous times on local radio and television. \nAndrews presentation will be preceded by – \nAnnual General Meeting\nDo not be put off by the AGM also being at the time of this meeting. At Midland Ancestors\, the record time for the AGM is about 7 minutes. We try to better it each year. \n  \n\nThis will be a Zoom Hybrid Meeting taking place in the Birmingham meeting Rooms and virtually.\nTo see more about how the business part of the afternoon will work and how to Register – Click Here \nVisit this page to find out how Zoom works for us. \n  \n\nNote that this meeting is the time of year when we have moved from a Saturday to a Wednesday. \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry – The Peplow Memorial Lecture\nSpeaker: Dr. Paul A. Fox\nEarly heraldry at a superficial level appears to have been a very masculine affair\, but women played a much more important role than has been generally recognised.  Moreover\, the frequency with which maternal arms (or elements thereof) were inherited has been under-estimated. Such transmission can provide vital clues for pedigrees. This presentation will include some long forgotten curiosities in the way that women formerly distinguished their personal arms from those of their husbands and fathers. \nPaul is an heraldist\, genealogist\, medievalist writer\, historical researcher\, lecturer and Editor of The Coat of Arms magazine. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\n  \nWilliam Augustus Peplow\nGus as he was known was a successful business man from the Black Country and descended from a long line of clockmakers. He had a keen interest in Heraldry\, which he helped develop in the society\, also making authoritative surveys of the hatchments of Worcestershire. He later became President of the Worcester Archaeological Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. After his demise in 1983 this annual lecture was set up in his memory. \n
