Also for those who have visited perhaps just once and felt they have not had the best out of it. \nThis is a group participation live computer assessment of the TNA website and their Discovery search engine\, finding out how to be undaunted by it so that you can make the most of your visit. \nYou can use your own laptop or suitable mobile device and tap in to the BMI WiFi or use the society computers.  Lasts about 2 ½ hours\, places strictly limited. Includes some handouts and time for some 1 to 1 afterwards. Takes place in the group library\, the Kingsley Norris Room at the BMI. DESCRIPTION:The Bicycle Industry of Wolverhampton – A talk by Vic Davies\nA history of the bicycle industry in Wolverhampton – one of rise and fall.  From its earliest beginnings in the town in 1868 until the early 1970s\, cycles were made in large quantities. There are known to have been over 200 cycle makers in the town between 1868 and 1975.  The industry flourished for nearly half a century\, producing famous names like Marston\, Sunbeam\, Star\, Wulfruna and Rudge.  Today there are no cycle makers left in Wolverhampton at all.

DESCRIPTION:Oral History at The Hive\nThe Hive is jointly home to Worcester Records Office and The University of Worcester. \nMaggie Tohill our speaker is an archivist with the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service and is one of the Oral History Society’s regional networkers for the West Midlands area. Maggie will look at how family historians might use oral history recordings to provide a wider social context for the life and times of their ancestors\, for example using recordings which cover events they have lived through\, trades/occupations they have followed and places they have lived. \nMaggie will deal with the pluses and minuses of using oral history in this way and suggest where members might look for suitable existing collections both locally and nationally.

DESCRIPTION:Skulduggery at Soho Foundry – by Mary Bodfish\nSoho Foundry was created in 1795 by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. What skulduggery can Mary mean ? \nJames Watt’s letter copying machine preserved the remarkable story\, in the words of all those involved\, of what happened in 1826 when the Soho Foundry’s chief cashier was caught with his fingers in the till. \nThe Soho Foundry was a factory created in 1795 by Matthew Boulton\, James Watt and their sons Matthew Robinson Boulton and James Watt junr. at Smethwick. It was built foe the manufacture of steam engines. Matthew Boulton and James Watt are known as the founding fathers of the Industrial Revolution – industrial giants of Birmingham. \nMary Bodfish is a well known local historian and writer.

DESCRIPTION:A Tour conducted by Jon Harcourt\, church historian.\nKnown locally as Bottom Church with dedication to St Edmund\, King and Martyr\, the church is in Castle Street Dudley. \nSt. Edmund King of East Anglia from 855 AD to 870 AD was defeated by the Vikings\, bound to a tree and executed with arrows\, then beheaded as he would not renounce the Christian faith. \nA church has stood on this site for over 1000 years\, the present building was built in 1746. Intriguingly during repairs to the tower in 2018\, Jon says a number of things came to light but we will have to wait until June 18th  to see what has appeared. \nLimited Spaces. DESCRIPTION:Winterbourne House Archives\nAn Edwardian historic house and garden nestled in a leafy corner of Birmingham\, just minutes from the city centre\, Winterbourne House was built in 1904 as the family home for John and Margaret Nettlefold. It was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of Edwardian times. Under the ownership of a number of families since the Nettlefolds left in 1919\, eventually bequeathed to the University of Birmingham it was in 2010 restored to its former glory. \nOur speaker tonight Henrietta Lockhart\, is the Collections Officer and will share with us the special objects\, photographs and documents contained within the Winterbourne Archives and some of the interesting family connections which have come to light during research into the Nettlefold family.
