SUMMARY:"The Lost Children" exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Between 1873 and 1948\, around 6000 destitute children were sent from the Birmingham Childrens Emigration Homes\, often referred to as Middlemore Homes\, to live with farmers in the wilds of Canada. In preparation for the epic journey\, the children spent up to a year at the Homes\, where they were provided with a basic eduction and taught skills that would make them useful workers. This gave them the opportunity to prosper\, saving them from a life of grime\, crime and poverty. But the future lives of the children varied enormously with tales of happiness and success\, as well as tales of great sadness. \nThis exhibition\, at the Birmingham & Midland Institute\, tells the stories of some of these children. There will be talks by experts from Canada\, and dramatic performances. \nMidland Ancestors is assisting Balsall Heath History Society with this event. SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: The Bicycle Industry of Wolverhampton
DESCRIPTION:The Bicycle Industry of Wolverhampton – A talk by Vic Davies\nA history of the bicycle industry in Wolverhampton – one of rise and fall.  From its earliest beginnings in the town in 1868 until the early 1970s\, cycles were made in large quantities. There are known to have been over 200 cycle makers in the town between 1868 and 1975.  The industry flourished for nearly half a century\, producing famous names like Marston\, Sunbeam\, Star\, Wulfruna and Rudge.  Today there are no cycle makers left in Wolverhampton at all.

SUMMARY:Stourbridge: Identifying Old Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Old Photographs and their identification and dating\nA presentation by Tom Doig. Tom will not consider the technical processes used in production of photographs but rather use the clues offered by the mounts\, the dimensions and the materials to uncover the essential facts. Similarly costumes will not be examined as a dating factor as grandma\, just as today didn’t always wear the latest fashion. Remember Grt Grandma always wore the same black bombazine after the death of her husband. \n  \nMembers are encouraged to bring photographs from their collections for identification\, Tom will use them as examples. \nDownload a poster here

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Oral History at The Hive
DESCRIPTION:Oral History at The Hive\nThe Hive is jointly home to Worcester Records Office and The University of Worcester. \nMaggie Tohill our speaker is an archivist with the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service and is one of the Oral History Society’s regional networkers for the West Midlands area. Maggie will look at how family historians might use oral history recordings to provide a wider social context for the life and times of their ancestors\, for example using recordings which cover events they have lived through\, trades/occupations they have followed and places they have lived. \nMaggie will deal with the pluses and minuses of using oral history in this way and suggest where members might look for suitable existing collections both locally and nationally.

SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: Skulduggery at Soho Foundry
DESCRIPTION:Skulduggery at Soho Foundry – by Mary Bodfish\nSoho Foundry was created in 1795 by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. What skulduggery can Mary mean ? \nJames Watt’s letter copying machine preserved the remarkable story\, in the words of all those involved\, of what happened in 1826 when the Soho Foundry’s chief cashier was caught with his fingers in the till. \nThe Soho Foundry was a factory created in 1795 by Matthew Boulton\, James Watt and their sons Matthew Robinson Boulton and James Watt junr. at Smethwick. It was built foe the manufacture of steam engines. Matthew Boulton and James Watt are known as the founding fathers of the Industrial Revolution – industrial giants of Birmingham. \nMary Bodfish is a well known local historian and writer.
