SUMMARY:Birmingham: On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers
DESCRIPTION:On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers\nSpeaker: J Keith Cheetham \nThe Pilgrim Fathers stand out in history as the best remembered of all American colonists and over one million North Americans count them as their ancestors. The Pilgrims were the first group to found their own colony and run it on a system of administration and obedience which was the forerunner of the established American tradition of government. Yet who were these people and from where did the name ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ originate? \nKeith traces their story from various parts of England\, first to Holland then on their epic journey to the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. \nNote that this meeting is not on a Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon \nClick here to download a poster

SUMMARY:Kenilworth: ‘Getting Rid of the Stink’
DESCRIPTION:Getting Rid of the Stink – The Public Health Revolution\nA presentation by Dr. Mike Haynes \nThroughout history\, millions have been killed by typhoid\, cholera\, diphtheria and even simple diarrhoea. Drawing on years of research into the history of public health in the UK and Europe\, this talk looks at the ways in which a healthier environment was created for us all – less by doctors and the medical world than by the great nineteenth century engineers building an infrastructure that is still used today. Emeritus professor Mike\, discusses with some humour\,  how the introduction of clean water helped rid us of some unpleasant diseases so improving the lives of our ancestors.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Riches of the Earth - Kingsley Norris Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Riches of the Earth\nMary Bodfish will explain all \nFrom being Staffordshire husbandmen\, the Gilbert family worked its way up to producing two brothers\, nephews of an ancestress\, who were Thomas Gilbert (1720-98) and John Gilbert (1724-95)\, prominent entrepreneurs of the early Industrial Revolution.   As well as with important parliamentary reform\, they were involved with pioneering mining and canal engineering on a large and widespread scale; and were friends and colleagues of Matthew Boulton\, James Brindley\, and Josiah Wedgwood.   Which brings it all neatly back into the Birmingham area! \nMary will describe the process of the research\, going back to 1599\, well sprinkled with probate inventories\, wills and marriage bonds along the way. \nClick Here to download a Poster \n  \nIt was from a germ of an idea of Dr. Stuart Kingsley Norris\, retired surgeon at Birmingham Eye Hospital\, that BMSGH now Midland Ancestors\, was established in 1963. As its pioneering founder member\, after his untimely death in 1972\, this annual lecture was set up in his memory. The lecture is always by a society member. \nNote that this meeting is not on a Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon

SUMMARY:Birmingham: ‘May We Remind You’
DESCRIPTION:‘May We Remind You’ – Members Evening\nThe late Joyce Finnemore when “doing” the family history talks circuit would frequently deliver a presentation entitled “May I Remind You” intended to draw the researchers mind back to perhaps long forgotten family history resources. Tonight we follow that same theme with a Members Evening. \n  \nMembers Evening does not mean that the evening is restricted to members\, rather that the evenings contributions are by members. \nAnyone who would like to make a contribution is asked to contact the organiser\, Peter Middleton\, see address below. \nThere will also be Festive refreshments available this evening. \n
