SUMMARY:Stourbridge & Black Country Group - Wilful Murder? The Story of the Lusitania
DESCRIPTION:Wilful Murder? The Story of the Lusitania\n \nSpeaker: Andrew Lound\nWarfare has always produced a number of horrendous incidents\, but one remains as controversial today as it did in 1915 – the sinking of the crack Cunard liner ‘Lusitania’. In a dramatic presentation featuring music and visual effects Andrew traces the history of the ship\, the circumstances of her demise and efforts to salvage the wreck. With the sinking of the Lusitania the myth of chivalrous warfare was exploded forever. A performance to remember. Images\, Music\, Props\, Costume. \nThe RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on the 7th May 1915 0ff the southern coast of Ireland. The British ocean liner went down in just 18 minutes\, resulting in the deaths of 1\,198 of the 1\,959 people on board\, including 128 Americans. \n  \nAndrew Lound \n \nAndrew has been presenting public lectures and staging exhibitions for nearly 50 years and has participated in thousands of events. He regularly tours the UK with his Trademark Odyssey Dramatic Presentations® and Lectures® and is invited back time and again due to popular demand. He has supported astronomy and space science public awareness in the United Kingdom since the late 1970s having organized and funded many public activities in support of Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry. He was also co-organizer of the National Astronomy & Spaceflight Shows—shows of a style that changed the public view of astronomy events. He conceived and managed a large number of public science projects using developing technologies including telerobotics.

SUMMARY:Stourbridge & Black Country Group - The Battle of Gheluvelt 31st October 1914
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Gheluvelt 31st October 1914\nIn October 1914 the British Army found itself fighting for its life at the First Battle of Ypres. Outnumbered\, outgunned and under relentless German pressure\, the defenders clung grimly to their positions. But a crisis came on 31 October when a massive German assault pierced the front line\, capturing the village of Gheluvelt and opening the road to Ypres and then to the Channel Ports. \nAll that stood between the British Army and disaster was a tiny reserve of just under 500 men of the 1st Worcestershire Regiment. \nAgainst all odds\, this brave band would launch a remarkable counterattack that would turn the tide of battle and become known as ‘the attack that saved the British Empire’. Their heroism is immortalised to this day in Gheluvelt Park in Worcester. \nThis lecture tells the story of the battle and how a few hundred soldiers from changed the course of the First World War. \n \nSpeaker: Dr Spencer Jones\n \nDr Spencer Jones is an award-winning military historian with a passion for bringing the past to life. He serves as Regimental Historian for the Royal Regiment of Artillery and is Honorary President of the Western Front Association. He also co-hosts the world’s leading First World War podcast\, ‘Not So Quiet on the Western Front’\, and has written ten books on military history.

SUMMARY:Stourbridge & Black Country Group - The Careless Carless Case
DESCRIPTION:The Careless Carless Case\nFrom Victorian Scandal to a Theatre Play\n \nIn 1886\, Britian was rocked by a domestic scandal when 17-year-old Agnes Bertha Carless was ‘willingly abducted’ by household lodger Arthur Fegan from her home in Wolverhampton. The story filled local and national newspapers and added salacious details to an already outrageous case. In 2026\, the story was brought to life on the stage as a play\, ‘The Careless Carless Case’. \nJoin Dominika\, author of the play and our local family historian\, as she unravels the complexities of the scandal and the fascinating relationships between a cast of remarkable characters\, as well as explaining how she brought this story to life. \n  \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dominika Nala\n \n
