SUMMARY:Online Event - Park Street Burial ground
DESCRIPTION:Park Street Burial Ground – The HS2 Dig\nDid you know that one of the biggest archaeological digs in the UK has been taking place in Birmingham city centre ? \nPark Street burial ground was begun in 1810 as an overspill burial site from St Martins. The Bull Ring cemetery was filling up as the local population underwent massive increase as the town expanded so this new site in Park Street was chosen. As part of the preparations for HS2’s phase one\, an archaeological team has been excavating this burial ground. They’ve been discovering new information about life and death in Birmingham during the 19th century. \nAs archaeological excavations of Park Street burial ground by LM for HS2 come to a close\, find out what has been learned from this fascinating dig right in the city centre.\nPaul McGarrity\, Community Engagement Officer at MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) will tell us more. \nAs an appetiser\, see here in a new tab – MOLA HS2 Dig in Birmingham \n  \nWarning – Human remains will be shown\, may cause upset. \n  \nRegister for this Midland Ancestors on line event by using this link Park Street \nAn Online event using Zoom. SUMMARY:Online Event – Who's The Daddy ?
DESCRIPTION:Who’s The Daddy ?\nOr some ideas for identifying the father of an illegitimate child.\nPresenter – Penny Smith.\nMost of us have come across an illegitimate child in our research and then wondered about who is the father.   Routinely we are told that it is impossible to identify the father but occasionally you can.  Usually there is only one person who will be certain but there may be an indication lurking in the records.  Have you looked for them all?   This presentation will demonstrate some clues which may take you further in answering the age-old question of “who’s the daddy?” \nPenny is Chair of our Wolverhampton Group and Vice-Chair Genealogy of Midland Ancestors. \n  \nAn Online event using Zoom. SUMMARY:Online Event - Lest We Forget
DESCRIPTION:Lest We Forget with Sandra Taylor \nWorcestershire Memorials and their Casualties \nWar memorials are a familiar sight on our landscape (there are around 100\,000 in the UK)\, located on village greens\, outside churches\, in schools etc. They are part of our nation’s heritage\, each and every one of them demonstrating the skills of stonemasons\, woodworkers\, glaziers and other specialist craftsmen.  With no bodies allowed to be repatriated following the War Office directive in 1915\, the grieving families had no grave to visit making the war memorials the focal point for remembering loved ones and the sacrifice they made.  Sandras talk is based on Worcestershire War Memorials and the casualties commemorated on them. \n  \nSandra is a retired nurse with a lifelong passion for history and a family historian. This indirectly led her into researching names on Worcestershire war memorials\, involvement in restoration projects\, researching nurses who have died in conflict. She is owner researcher and administrator of www.rememberthefallen.co.uk and for the past 14 months\, and a Coordinator for the CWGC’s Eyes On Hands On project. She is responsible for volunteers looking after war graves in over 1\,240 cemeteries within a number of English and Welsh counties. \nAn Online event using Zoom. Visit this page to find out how we do it. \nYou can Register now by using this link – Lest We Forget \n  \nAll registrants will be acknowledged with joining instructions included\, Registration closes at 12:00 noon the day prior. Meeting times are prompt\, please allow yourself good time. “Doors Open” at 1:30 pm for 2:00 pm start. \nAll Midland Ancestors presentations are the intellectual property of the speaker presenting. SUMMARY:Kenilworth: CHANGE OF PROGRAMME: 'Marriage law and practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900'
DESCRIPTION:Our scheduled speaker\, Richard Churchley\, would prefer to give his talk live\, rather than via Zoom. We will therefore be postponing his talk\, ”My Churchley Family’ – From 1300 – 2019: A typical West Midlands Family’ to another date. \nInstead\, we are very pleased to announce a returning speaker: \nMarriage law and practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900\nA talk by Professor Rebecca Probert \n‘The Marriage Act 1836 laid the foundations of the modern law of marriage. It introduced the possibility of marrying in a registered place of worship or register office\, brought Jewish and Quaker weddings within a new legal framework\, and introduced a system of civil registration for all marriages\, including those celebrated according to Anglican rites. \nNonetheless\, it cannot be assumed that all couples were able to marry as they chose under the 1836 Act. How a couple could marry depended on local factors\, and how they navigated the options available to them can tell us a lot about what they valued. \nIn this talk Professor Rebecca Probert will review the take-up of the options introduced by the 1836 Act\, with a particular focus on the Midlands\, explain the constraints that might determine couples’ choices\, and identify the clues that lie within the marriage certificate itself.’ \nAn Online event using Zoom. Registration is now OPEN \nYou can register by using this link: Marriage Law and Practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900 \nAll registrants will be acknowledged within about 24 hours. \nRegistration closes at 12 noon on the day of the meeting. \nMeeting times are prompt\, please allow yourself good time\, especially if you’re using Zoom for the first time. \n“Doors Open” at 7:00pm for 7:30pm start. \nVisit this page to find out how we do it. \nAll registrants will be acknowledged with joining instructions included. \nAll Midland Ancestors presentations are the intellectual property of the speaker presenting.
