SUMMARY:Kenilworth: 'Family Networks in Elizabethan England' - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Cathryn Enis\, Honorary Research Fellow at the College of Arts and Law\, University of Birmingham \nCathryn writes\, “I tend to specialise in family networks so I could focus on Kenilworth families if you like and perhaps share some of the sources I use. I also like to bring women to the fore and show how they were central to creating these family networks (as with the Dugdale paper) so I can emphasise that and we could make that the focus of the Q&A.”

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Spread the Net Wider and Dig Deeper - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Spread the Net Wider and Dig Deeper.\nSpeaker: Ann Simcock\nWhen we first begin to research our families often the aim is to try and get as far back as possible adding names and dates with a hope to find a link to someone famous. However\, our ancestors were living breathing human beings with fascinating stories\, both happy and sad. By using basic records and extracting every fact and hint and extending our research  to include people and places involved with our ancestors\, their stories can be discovered and a better understanding of our past revealed.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Peplow Memorial Lecture – CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry\nSpeaker: Dr. Paul A. Fox\nEarly heraldry at a superficial level appears to have been a very masculine affair\, but women played a much more important role than has been generally recognised.  Moreover\, the frequency with which maternal arms (or elements thereof) were inherited has been under-estimated. Such transmission can provide vital clues for pedigrees. This presentation will include some long forgotten curiosities in the way that women formerly distinguished their personal arms from those of their husbands and fathers. \n  \nWilliam Augustus Peplow\nGus as he was known was a successful business man from the Black Country and descended from a long line of clockmakers. He had a keen interest in Heraldry\, which he helped develop in the society\, also making authoritative surveys of the hatchments of Worcestershire. He later became President of the Worcester Archaeological Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. After his demise in 1983 this annual lecture was set up in his memory. \n
