SUMMARY:On Line Event - Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors\nPresenter Dr Janet Few\nThe history of mental ill-health is poorly understood and many of those who were labelled as ‘idiots’\, ‘imbeciles’ or ‘lunatics’ in the past would have a very different diagnosis today. This presentation looks at the history of reactions to and the treatment of those who we would now recognise as being mentally ill\, or as having a learning disability. It also investigates the institutions where sufferers might be held and the sources we can use to find out more about these\, often forgotten\, members of our family. \nJanet is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken at many national and international genealogical events and is also a well-known author and President of the Family History Federation \n  \nAn Online Event using Zoom. Visit this page to find out how we do it. \n  \nYou can Register now by using this link – Madness\, Mania and Melancholia \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: In Memoriam - Records Of Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:New Date Due to Industrial Action on the railways\nIn Memoriam – Records Of Commemoration\nPresenter Doreen Hopwood\nAs family historians\, we follow our ancestors from the cradle to the grave and this presentation explores the many ways in which the memory of our ancestors has been kept alive.  It explains how to locate their final resting places and discusses the changes in funeral and mourning practices as well as the iconography of gravestones and memorial inscriptions.  It includes records generated by the Church\, State and organisations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and shows how Britons who died abroad may have been memorialised in this country. \nDoreen will be known to many West Midland members having been the genealogist for Birmingham City Council for over twenty years and a tutor in family\, community and social history at all levels. She takes a particular joy in her role for family history publications as a genealogical “agony aunt” answering reader’s questions and helping them to break down their brick walls. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\nNote this is the time of year when we change from Wednesdays to Saturdays \n

DESCRIPTION:Due to circumstances beyond our control (rail travel disruptions) there will be a change of topic and a change of delivery mode for this meeting. It will not be a face to face meeting but will be entirely Zoom. \nApologies for the short notice\, and apologies for any inconvenience so caused. \n\n\nThe Chatterley Whitfield Explosion\nPresenter – Ann Simcock\nThe area which our society covers has many and varied heavy industries but one is present throughout and that is mining. SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: Who's The Daddy?
DESCRIPTION:We all encounter illegitimate births at different times in our research and the general view is that it is impossible\, or at the least very difficult\, to identify the father.  There are records that you can use to attempt to uncover the truth about the parentage – have you explored them all? \nPenny\, our group leader\, will be demonstrating some of the records that may help you identify who’s the daddy. \n  \nPlease note this is an afternoon meeting.     Doors open at 1.45 p.m. for 2.00 p.m. start

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry – The Peplow Memorial Lecture\nSpeaker: Dr. Paul A. Fox\nEarly heraldry at a superficial level appears to have been a very masculine affair\, but women played a much more important role than has been generally recognised.  Moreover\, the frequency with which maternal arms (or elements thereof) were inherited has been under-estimated. Such transmission can provide vital clues for pedigrees. This presentation will include some long forgotten curiosities in the way that women formerly distinguished their personal arms from those of their husbands and fathers. \nPaul is an heraldist\, genealogist\, medievalist writer\, historical researcher\, lecturer and Editor of The Coat of Arms magazine. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\n  \nWilliam Augustus Peplow\nGus as he was known was a successful business man from the Black Country and descended from a long line of clockmakers. He had a keen interest in Heraldry\, which he helped develop in the society\, also making authoritative surveys of the hatchments of Worcestershire. He later became President of the Worcester Archaeological Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. After his demise in 1983 this annual lecture was set up in his memory. \n
