SUMMARY:On Line Event - Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors\nPresenter Dr Janet Few\nThe history of mental ill-health is poorly understood and many of those who were labelled as ‘idiots’\, ‘imbeciles’ or ‘lunatics’ in the past would have a very different diagnosis today. This presentation looks at the history of reactions to and the treatment of those who we would now recognise as being mentally ill\, or as having a learning disability. It also investigates the institutions where sufferers might be held and the sources we can use to find out more about these\, often forgotten\, members of our family. \nJanet is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken at many national and international genealogical events and is also a well-known author and President of the Family History Federation \n  \nAn Online Event using Zoom. Visit this page to find out how we do it. \n  \nYou can Register now by using this link – Madness\, Mania and Melancholia \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: In Memoriam - Records Of Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:New Date Due to Industrial Action on the railways\nIn Memoriam – Records Of Commemoration\nPresenter Doreen Hopwood\nAs family historians\, we follow our ancestors from the cradle to the grave and this presentation explores the many ways in which the memory of our ancestors has been kept alive.  It explains how to locate their final resting places and discusses the changes in funeral and mourning practices as well as the iconography of gravestones and memorial inscriptions.  It includes records generated by the Church\, State and organisations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and shows how Britons who died abroad may have been memorialised in this country. \nDoreen will be known to many West Midland members having been the genealogist for Birmingham City Council for over twenty years and a tutor in family\, community and social history at all levels. She takes a particular joy in her role for family history publications as a genealogical “agony aunt” answering reader’s questions and helping them to break down their brick walls. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\nNote this is the time of year when we change from Wednesdays to Saturdays \n

SUMMARY:Kenilworth: 'Family Networks in Elizabethan England'
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Cathryn Enis\, Honorary Research Fellow at the College of Arts and Law\, University of Birmingham \nCathryn writes\, “I tend to specialise in family networks so I could focus on Kenilworth families if you like and perhaps share some of the sources I use. I also like to bring women to the fore and show how they were central to creating these family networks (as with the Dugdale paper) so I can emphasise that and we could make that the focus of the Q&A.” \nVENUE TBC \nRescheduled from 2020 and Nov 2021

SUMMARY:The Chatterley Whitfield Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Due to circumstances beyond our control (rail travel disruptions) there will be a change of topic and a change of delivery mode for this meeting. It will not be a face to face meeting but will be entirely Zoom. \nApologies for the short notice\, and apologies for any inconvenience so caused. \n\n\nThe Chatterley Whitfield Explosion\nPresenter – Ann Simcock\nThe area which our society covers has many and varied heavy industries but one is present throughout and that is mining. There are probably not many of our members who either do not have\, or know\, someone involved in the industry. People have mined the earth for centuries and many have suffered serious injury or even died in pursuit of the occupation. Ann has at least 6 ancestors who died earning their living in this way. Ann’s presentation involves just one\, her 2x Great Grandfather who\, along with 23 other miners died in tragic circumstances at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery\, Stoke on Trent\, on 7th Feb 1881. \n  \nAn Online event using Zoom. Visit this page to find out how we do it. \nYou can Register now by using this link – Chatterley Whitfield \n  \nAll registrants will be acknowledged with joining instructions included. Registration closes at 12:00 noon the day prior. Meeting times are prompt\, please allow yourself good time. “Doors Open” at 1:30 pm for 2:00 pm start. \nAll Midland Ancestors presentations are the intellectual property of the speaker presenting. Copying or recording any event in any way is strictly prohibited without the express permission of the speaker.
