SUMMARY:Kenilworth: The Green Room Plaque
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room Plaque\nA bronze memorial plaque commemorating twelve actors who died serving in WWI was discovered in a Rugby sale-room. The stories of the lives and deaths of these actors will be revealed and show something of  the acting profession at the turn of the 20th Century. Military archives\, contemporary newspapers and other sources allow their stories to be told\, and family history techniques traced some living relatives and family photographs. \nJohn Frearson will tell us of his efforts to identify the men mentioned.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Victorians and the Christmas Season
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk looks at the influence of the Victorians on Christmas as we know it today. The Victorians repackaged older traditions and customs that suited their new sensibilities\, ideas and concerns. It is said the Victorians:‘mixed the ingredients of the English Christmas to create an extremely rich plum pudding’. Many of these changes took place early in Victoria’s reign\, including the arrival of the Christmas Card\, the Christmas Cracker and new-found popularity of the Christmas Tree. We will explore why and how the Victorians re-energised and transformed the festive season. \nSpeaker: Danny Wells

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Riches of the Earth
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom being Staffordshire husbandmen\, the Gilbert family worked its way up to producing two brothers\, nephews of an ancestress\, who were Thomas Gilbert (1720-98) and John Gilbert (1724-95)\,  prominent entrepreneurs of the early Industrial Revolution.   As well as with important parliamentary reform\, they were involved with pioneering mining and canal engineering on a large and widespread scale; and were friends and colleagues of  Matthew Boulton\, James Brindley\, and Josiah Wedgwood.   Which brings it all neatly back into the Birmingham area! \nMary will describe the process of the research\, going back to 1599\, well sprinkled with probate inventories\, wills and marriage bonds along the way. \nSpeaker: Mary Bodfish

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Organising and preserving your family history archive
DESCRIPTION:However you choose to store your family history items there are issues of best practice to be addressed. There has been a revolution in moving from hard copy to digital recording. The storage of digital records brings its own challenges if they are to be preserved in such a way as to provide long-term protection. Computer storage needs to be guarded from degradation\, corruption and data loss.   Physical preservation of documents\, photographs and artefacts also requires careful attention.  This evening will take the form of a question and discussion forum that will focus on members own experience.  We may not be able to provide all the answers but you will hopefully receive advice and pointers for your guidance. If you have particular questions or an experience to share please contact me with details (treasurer@bmsgh.org) as soon as possible. Offers of expertise will also be much appreciated.
