SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: Prince Rupert of The Rhine - King Charles I's Pirate Prince
DESCRIPTION:An exciting presentation by Max Keen who will be dressed in period costume. \nPrince Rupert was the nephew of King Charles I and one of the English Civil War’s most paradoxical heroes.   Handsome\, impetuous and courageous\, he was the epitome of the ‘Cavalier’\, yet he was born a German prince and a protestant.   As the Royalist General of Horse\, he was a brilliant strategist\, but a volatile and impetuous tactician.   He also served the royalist cause as an Admiral and in later life commanded fleets against the Dutch. \n  \nDoors open at 7.15 p.m. for a 7.30 p.m. start

SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: If You Can't stand The Heat Get Out Of The Kitchen - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Not a talk about cooking!\nCas Bailey is a former Staffordshire Police Officer.  She talks about her life in the Police Force in the 1970s when being a white male was really the only thing to be.  Her tales of this time are akin to the TV programme Life On Mars and very entertaining.  Life was very different to now-remarks we would now consider sexist\, ageist or racist were the norm.  Cas tells her story with light hearted humour and the knowledge that mostly\, no harm was ever meant by the things that were said or done.

SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: Hereward The Wake
DESCRIPTION:Hereward The Wake\n“The Last True Englishman” or “A Hero of Romance More Than History?”  Famed through folklore\, immortalised through myth\, Hereward The Wake has been depicted as an all-action hero of Anglo Saxon descent (but he could have been half Danish!). \nHis adventures and escapades were recorded in prose and verse within 40 years of his death which was unusual.  But just WHO was he? \nLet’s sort the myth from fact; the legend from reality.  All in costume from the 11th century of course. \nRetired history teacher\, Max Keen will tell us all.

SUMMARY:Wolverhampton: Dudley Street Origins\, Development and Warring Neighbours
DESCRIPTION:What is now one of the main shopping streets of Wolverhampton has a long history going back to the early settlement of the city.  Jackie has been researching Dudley Street for almost two years and has gathered a vast archive of material and will include a selection of the available information in her talk and then only up to the early 1900’s.  Whilst researching she has travelled to various Archives and Record Offices\, including the National Archives\, to explore records and examine documents and has\, therefore\, used a variety of sources.   Learn about these records and what you might discover from these about your own families. \nSpeaker:  Jackie Harrison
