SUMMARY:Stourbridge Group - Clive of India
DESCRIPTION:Clive of India\nSpeaker: Max Keen\n \nRobert Clive(29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774) \nAt Madras\, Clive was moody and quarrelsome; he attempted suicide and once fought a duel. He found solace in the governor’s library\, where he virtually educated himself. \nFind out how he grew from tearaway youth to empire builder: the facts\, figures\, battles\, personalities and good old British derring-do presented by Max dressed the part! \nIts time to take on the East India Trading Company with the armaments of humour\, tongue-in-cheekiness all wrapped up in an attempt to put the record straight! \nBackground \nRobert Clive\, 1st Baron Clive (29 September 1725 – 22 November 1774)\, also known as Clive of India\, was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency. \nClive has been widely credited for laying the foundation of the British East India Company (EIC) rule in Bengal. He began as a “writer” (the term used then in India for an office clerk) for the EIC in 1744\, however after being caught up in military action during the fall of Madras\, Clive joined the EIC’s private army. \nClive rapidly rose through the military ranks of the EIC and was eventually credited with establishing Company rule in Bengal by winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757. \nWhen Clive left India in January 1767 he had a fortune of £401\,102 (equivalent to £67\,900\,000 in 2023) which he remitted through the Dutch East India Company. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Stourbridge & Black Country Group - Wilful Murder? The Story of the Lusitania
DESCRIPTION:Wilful Murder? The Story of the Lusitania\n \nSpeaker: Andrew Lound\nWarfare has always produced a number of horrendous incidents\, but one remains as controversial today as it did in 1915 – the sinking of the crack Cunard liner ‘Lusitania’. In a dramatic presentation featuring music and visual effects Andrew traces the history of the ship\, the circumstances of her demise and efforts to salvage the wreck. With the sinking of the Lusitania the myth of chivalrous warfare was exploded forever. A performance to remember. Images\, Music\, Props\, Costume. \nThe RMS Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on the 7th May 1915 0ff the southern coast of Ireland. The British ocean liner went down in just 18 minutes\, resulting in the deaths of 1\,198 of the 1\,959 people on board\, including 128 Americans. \n  \nAndrew Lound \n \nAndrew has been presenting public lectures and staging exhibitions for nearly 50 years and has participated in thousands of events. He regularly tours the UK with his Trademark Odyssey Dramatic Presentations® and Lectures® and is invited back time and again due to popular demand. He has supported astronomy and space science public awareness in the United Kingdom since the late 1970s having organized and funded many public activities in support of Birmingham Museum of Science & Industry. He was also co-organizer of the National Astronomy & Spaceflight Shows—shows of a style that changed the public view of astronomy events. He conceived and managed a large number of public science projects using developing technologies including telerobotics.
