There are probably not many of our members who either do not have\, or know\, someone involved in the industry. People have mined the earth for centuries and many have suffered serious injury or even died in pursuit of the occupation. Ann has at least 6 ancestors who died earning their living in this way. Ann’s presentation involves just one\, her 2x Great Grandfather who\, along with 23 other miners died in tragic circumstances at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery\, Stoke on Trent\, on 7th Feb 1881. \n  \nAn Online event using Zoom. DESCRIPTION:A talk by David Fry\, a researcher and author from Coventry\, who has been giving talks for over 25 years. David describes this talk: \n“Twenty years ago a few glass plates turned up at a car boot sale in Warwickshire. This led to the discovery of many more that had been found in the attic of a house in Earlsdon. With a lot of detective work the photographer tuned out to be a Coventry carpenter born in 1876 who appeared to take up the hobby in about 1900. Unusually he not only captured family life and holidays but also his workplace\, events in the city\, sporting events and military life from his time in the Royal Warwickshire Territorials. It is unusual to find such an extensive collection of working class amateur photographs from a period when the hobby was so expensive – normally it would be the domain of the middle classes with their own particular cultural interests.  \n“David has developed several talks\, based on this catch of plates that have evolved as more has been found out about Hancox.  He will put together aspects from all three for our delight. \n“The first is a general view of the collection based mainly upon the pre-war years. The second includes more views from this early period as well as the inter-war years reflecting the additional information uncovered about some of the individuals shown in the pictures as well as holiday fashions – the family were always at the cutting edge of fashion! The third talk brings the extra dimension of the recent contact made with Hancox grandson’s which revealed more material on Hancox’s early life together with a few more photos.” \nI’m sure he’s going to leave us wanting more! \n— \nWe are pleased to announce that David has agreed to give this talk online using Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Why Pay For Information From the Internet ?\nPresenter – John Hanson FSG\nNo one likes to pay for information unless they have to and\, whilst there is an increasing trend towards more information going into pay per view sites\, there is still a lot around for free – if you know where and how to look. This talk looks at some of the interesting sites that enable you to find the free information but also points out the limitations of not paying. \nJohn has been researching family history for nearly 40 years\, is a member of the Guild of One-Name studies and former trustee of the Society of Genealogists for 14 years. He has been lecturing on and teaching family history for nearly 20 years including at Who Do You Think You Are Live. DESCRIPTION:Lest We Forget with Sandra Taylor \nWorcestershire Memorials and their Casualties \nWar memorials are a familiar sight on our landscape (there are around 100\,000 in the UK)\, located on village greens\, outside churches\, in schools etc. They are part of our nation’s heritage\, each and every one of them demonstrating the skills of stonemasons\, woodworkers\, glaziers and other specialist craftsmen.  With no bodies allowed to be repatriated following the War Office directive in 1915\, the grieving families had no grave to visit making the war memorials the focal point for remembering loved ones and the sacrifice they made.  Sandras talk is based on Worcestershire War Memorials and the casualties commemorated on them. \n  \nSandra is a retired nurse with a lifelong passion for history and a family historian. This indirectly led her into researching names on Worcestershire war memorials\, involvement in restoration projects\, researching nurses who have died in conflict. She is owner researcher and administrator of www.rememberthefallen.co.uk and for the past 14 months\, and a Coordinator for the CWGC’s Eyes On Hands On project. We will therefore be postponing his talk\, ”My Churchley Family’ – From 1300 – 2019: A typical West Midlands Family’ to another date. \nInstead\, we are very pleased to announce a returning speaker: \nMarriage law and practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900\nA talk by Professor Rebecca Probert \n‘The Marriage Act 1836 laid the foundations of the modern law of marriage. It introduced the possibility of marrying in a registered place of worship or register office\, brought Jewish and Quaker weddings within a new legal framework\, and introduced a system of civil registration for all marriages\, including those celebrated according to Anglican rites.  \nNonetheless\, it cannot be assumed that all couples were able to marry as they chose under the 1836 Act. How a couple could marry depended on local factors\, and how they navigated the options available to them can tell us a lot about what they valued.  \nIn this talk Professor Rebecca Probert will review the take-up of the options introduced by the 1836 Act\, with a particular focus on the Midlands\, explain the constraints that might determine couples’ choices\, and identify the clues that lie within the marriage certificate itself.’ \nAn Online event using Zoom.
