SUMMARY:On Line – Family History Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Family History Workshop by Members\nThis months focus being Huguenot Ancestry\nAn On Line Members Meeting where you can hear about other members research experiences. Society member Sandra Robinson has kindly offered to run a Workshop focussed on researching Huguenot ancestry. Perhaps there is more Huguenot ancestry in our families than we realise\, might we all have Huguenots in our line if we look deep enough and wide enough. \nAnn is a Huguenot ancestry specialist. She is on the Council (governing body) of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland\, and is consultant genealogist to the Huguenot Museum in Rochester. She was Huguenot ancestry expert for BBC’s WDYTYA? (Joe Sugg\, Nov 2021). \nSandra speaks French\, Dutch\, Flemish and German and is familiar with searching records in France\, Belgium\, The Netherlands and Germany\, as well as the usual English-language records on both sides of the Atlantic\, these being countries from which Huguenots (and Walloons) originated\, or to which they fled to escape persecution. \nPlease get in touch by email eventsonline@mid-anc.uk  if you have a query or are stuck somewhere and we will raise it in the workshop. \n  \nThese meetings are always fairly loose format and will go where they lead. If you would like to make a contribution\, please get in touch. You do not need to be an experienced researcher. \nThe success of the format is entirely dependent upon the members. SUMMARY:On Line Event - Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors\nPresenter Dr Janet Few\nThe history of mental ill-health is poorly understood and many of those who were labelled as ‘idiots’\, ‘imbeciles’ or ‘lunatics’ in the past would have a very different diagnosis today. This presentation looks at the history of reactions to and the treatment of those who we would now recognise as being mentally ill\, or as having a learning disability. It also investigates the institutions where sufferers might be held and the sources we can use to find out more about these\, often forgotten\, members of our family. \nJanet is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken at many national and international genealogical events and is also a well-known author and President of the Family History Federation \n  \nAn Online Event using Zoom. SUMMARY:Kenilworth: 'Fred Hancox - An Exceptional Edwardian Amateur Coventry Photographer'
DESCRIPTION:A talk by David Fry\, a researcher and author from Coventry\, who has been giving talks for over 25 years. David describes this talk: \n“Twenty years ago a few glass plates turned up at a car boot sale in Warwickshire. This led to the discovery of many more that had been found in the attic of a house in Earlsdon. With a lot of detective work the photographer tuned out to be a Coventry carpenter born in 1876 who appeared to take up the hobby in about 1900. Unusually he not only captured family life and holidays but also his workplace\, events in the city\, sporting events and military life from his time in the Royal Warwickshire Territorials. It is unusual to find such an extensive collection of working class amateur photographs from a period when the hobby was so expensive – normally it would be the domain of the middle classes with their own particular cultural interests.  \n“David has developed several talks\, based on this catch of plates that have evolved as more has been found out about Hancox.  He will put together aspects from all three for our delight. \n“The first is a general view of the collection based mainly upon the pre-war years. The second includes more views from this early period as well as the inter-war years reflecting the additional information uncovered about some of the individuals shown in the pictures as well as holiday fashions – the family were always at the cutting edge of fashion! The third talk brings the extra dimension of the recent contact made with Hancox grandson’s which revealed more material on Hancox’s early life together with a few more photos.” \nI’m sure he’s going to leave us wanting more! \n— \nWe are pleased to announce that David has agreed to give this talk online using Zoom. Registration is now OPEN \nYou can register by using this link: Fred Hancox: An exceptional Edwardian amateur Coventry photographer \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. SUMMARY:Online Event - Park Street Burial ground
DESCRIPTION:Park Street Burial Ground – The HS2 Dig\nDid you know that one of the biggest archaeological digs in the UK has been taking place in Birmingham city centre ? \nPark Street burial ground was begun in 1810 as an overspill burial site from St Martins. The Bull Ring cemetery was filling up as the local population underwent massive increase as the town expanded so this new site in Park Street was chosen. As part of the preparations for HS2’s phase one\, an archaeological team has been excavating this burial ground. They’ve been discovering new information about life and death in Birmingham during the 19th century. \nAs archaeological excavations of Park Street burial ground by LM for HS2 come to a close\, find out what has been learned from this fascinating dig right in the city centre.\nPaul McGarrity\, Community Engagement Officer at MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) will tell us more. \nAs an appetiser\, see here in a new tab – MOLA HS2 Dig in Birmingham \n  \nWarning – Human remains will be shown\, may cause upset. \n  \nRegister for this Midland Ancestors on line event by using this link Park Street \nAn Online event using Zoom.
