SUMMARY:Kenilworth: "Thomas Stokes\, Apprentice" via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:As this is an online event\, you will need to register your interest via the link below:\nClick here to register for this meeting before 11th February 2026\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \nThe Life and Times of Thomas Stokes\, Apprentice\nSpeaker: Steve Manning \nA fascinating ‘how to do it’ family history adventure built around the indenture papers signed by Thomas Stokes of Yarwell\, Northamptonshire and his widowed mother in 1842. \nSteve’s interest in Family History began when he was still a teenager. Unsurprisingly\, his level of activity waxed and waned over the years as work and family needs took priority\, but that early enthusiasm never dimmed. Looking back with the wisdom of years\, he acknowledges much of his early research had serious shortcomings – but he has absolutely no regrets about having started out so young. \nSteve currently serves as both Chairman of the Family History Federation and President of the Peterborough & District Family History as well as being a member of various other family history societies. An enthusiastic public speaker\, he absolutely loves talking on his favourite topic – Family History! He is based on the Cambridgeshire / Lincolnshire / Norfolk border\, so delivering talks by Zoom works!

SUMMARY:2026 Kingsley Norris Memorial Talk via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:As this is an online event\, you will need to register your interest via the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/eQjW05g5TQidHs8Fx9OsRQ. \nPlease use the email address we have on record as your credentials will be checked before allowing you into the session. He has established about 30\ndifferent Titterton family trees but there are a number of brick walls\nstopping them being connected together.\nThere are three types of DNA testing;\n· that going back in the female line (mitochondrial DNA);\n· that going back in the male line (Y Chromosome DNA)\n· that going back in all lines (autosomal DNA).\nOne might expect that the Y chromosome DNA tests would be the best one\nto help a One Name study. John was contacted by a complete stranger with\na Titterton grandmother. Their autosomal DNA test had three Titterton\nhits which did not connect to the grandparent nor to each other. The talk\ndiscusses how he was able to make connections between different Titterton\nbranches using these autosomal results. He was then able to break down\nbrick walls.

SUMMARY:Kenilworth: The Cottage by the Well
DESCRIPTION:Via Zoom\nSpeaker – Mary Bodfish\n\n\n\n\n\nMary says “The world of the past has fascinated me from my earliest memories; and exploring it continues to absorb me in retirement. My working life was spent firstly in bookselling and then in university administration\, but days off frequently found me rummaging happily in record offices and libraries. I began working over 50 years ago on the question of “How come I was landed with the name Bodfish?” \nMary was a founder member of Smethwick Local History Society\, and is currently chairman. She has taught local history research and palaeography for theUniversity of Birmingham’s School of Continuing Studies. \nThetalk … \nBetween 1817 and 1865 the Cottage by the Well at Tadmarton was home to Mary’s 3xg-grandmother\, her daughter and her grand daughter. The first two made the same mistake in life – not so the third! This is the story of how Mary discovered their trials\, tribulations and eventually triumphant survival in a world that was often hard and unforgiving. \n  \nRegister in advance for this meeting: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYldeyurTwtH9Lujm9kiI5-TdxlshkNynL5  Please email kenilworthfhs@gmail.com  for further information.

SUMMARY:On Line Event – For The Sake Of The Empire
DESCRIPTION:By Special Request from the McNab Family. On Zoom.\nFor the Sake of the Empire\nPresenter – Peter Middleton \nA Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone in Witton Cemetery marks the last resting place of a Canadian soldier.\nHe had\, in fact\, been born only two miles away in Witton Lane\, Handsworth. Peter will provide an account of his subjects life experiences (1879-1918) viewed against a family and social background which led him to take a leap into the unknown. Peter in his talk seeks to understand why James McNab took the decision in 1903 to leave his family behind and emigrate to Canada for a promise of a free grant of 160 acres of land. You will hear how Canadian resources\, especially census returns were able to provide the means to pin-point exactly where he farmed. Learn how military records were able to provide a great deal of logistical information and help reveal the poignant details leading to a life of promise being tragically cut short. \n  \nAn Online event using Zoom. SUMMARY:On Line – Family History Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Family History Workshop by Members\nThis months focus being Huguenot Ancestry\nAn On Line Members Meeting where you can hear about other members research experiences. Society member Sandra Robinson has kindly offered to run a Workshop focussed on researching Huguenot ancestry. Perhaps there is more Huguenot ancestry in our families than we realise\, might we all have Huguenots in our line if we look deep enough and wide enough. \nAnn is a Huguenot ancestry specialist. She is on the Council (governing body) of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland\, and is consultant genealogist to the Huguenot Museum in Rochester. She was Huguenot ancestry expert for BBC’s WDYTYA? (Joe Sugg\, Nov 2021). \nSandra speaks French\, Dutch\, Flemish and German and is familiar with searching records in France\, Belgium\, The Netherlands and Germany\, as well as the usual English-language records on both sides of the Atlantic\, these being countries from which Huguenots (and Walloons) originated\, or to which they fled to escape persecution. \nPlease get in touch by email eventsonline@mid-anc.uk  if you have a query or are stuck somewhere and we will raise it in the workshop. \n  \nThese meetings are always fairly loose format and will go where they lead. SUMMARY:On Line Event - Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:Madness\, Mania and Melancholia: The Mental Health of our Ancestors\nPresenter Dr Janet Few\nThe history of mental ill-health is poorly understood and many of those who were labelled as ‘idiots’\, ‘imbeciles’ or ‘lunatics’ in the past would have a very different diagnosis today. This presentation looks at the history of reactions to and the treatment of those who we would now recognise as being mentally ill\, or as having a learning disability. It also investigates the institutions where sufferers might be held and the sources we can use to find out more about these\, often forgotten\, members of our family. \nJanet is an experienced and qualified family\, social and community historian who lectures regularly on these subjects throughout the UK and overseas. She has spoken at many national and international genealogical events and is also a well-known author and President of the Family History Federation \n  \nAn Online Event using Zoom. SUMMARY:The Chatterley Whitfield Explosion
DESCRIPTION:Due to circumstances beyond our control (rail travel disruptions) there will be a change of topic and a change of delivery mode for this meeting. It will not be a face to face meeting but will be entirely Zoom. \nApologies for the short notice\, and apologies for any inconvenience so caused. \n\n\nThe Chatterley Whitfield Explosion\nPresenter – Ann Simcock\nThe area which our society covers has many and varied heavy industries but one is present throughout and that is mining. There are probably not many of our members who either do not have\, or know\, someone involved in the industry. People have mined the earth for centuries and many have suffered serious injury or even died in pursuit of the occupation. Ann has at least 6 ancestors who died earning their living in this way. Ann’s presentation involves just one\, her 2x Great Grandfather who\, along with 23 other miners died in tragic circumstances at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery\, Stoke on Trent\, on 7th Feb 1881. \n  \nAn Online event using Zoom.
