SUMMARY:Birmingham: On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers
DESCRIPTION:On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers\nSpeaker: J Keith Cheetham \nThe Pilgrim Fathers stand out in history as the best remembered of all American colonists and over one million North Americans count them as their ancestors. The Pilgrims were the first group to found their own colony and run it on a system of administration and obedience which was the forerunner of the established American tradition of government. Yet who were these people and from where did the name ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ originate? \nKeith traces their story from various parts of England\, first to Holland then on their epic journey to the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. \nNote that this meeting is not on a Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon \nClick here to download a poster

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Riches of the Earth - Kingsley Norris Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Riches of the Earth\nMary Bodfish will explain all \nFrom being Staffordshire husbandmen\, the Gilbert family worked its way up to producing two brothers\, nephews of an ancestress\, who were Thomas Gilbert (1720-98) and John Gilbert (1724-95)\, prominent entrepreneurs of the early Industrial Revolution.   As well as with important parliamentary reform\, they were involved with pioneering mining and canal engineering on a large and widespread scale; and were friends and colleagues of Matthew Boulton\, James Brindley\, and Josiah Wedgwood.   Which brings it all neatly back into the Birmingham area! \nMary will describe the process of the research\, going back to 1599\, well sprinkled with probate inventories\, wills and marriage bonds along the way. \nClick Here to download a Poster \n  \nIt was from a germ of an idea of Dr. Stuart Kingsley Norris\, retired surgeon at Birmingham Eye Hospital\, that BMSGH now Midland Ancestors\, was established in 1963. As its pioneering founder member\, after his untimely death in 1972\, this annual lecture was set up in his memory. The lecture is always by a society member. \nNote that this meeting is not on a Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon

SUMMARY:"The Lost Children" exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Between 1873 and 1948\, around 6000 destitute children were sent from the Birmingham Childrens Emigration Homes\, often referred to as Middlemore Homes\, to live with farmers in the wilds of Canada. In preparation for the epic journey\, the children spent up to a year at the Homes\, where they were provided with a basic eduction and taught skills that would make them useful workers. This gave them the opportunity to prosper\, saving them from a life of grime\, crime and poverty. But the future lives of the children varied enormously with tales of happiness and success\, as well as tales of great sadness. \nThis exhibition\, at the Birmingham & Midland Institute\, tells the stories of some of these children. There will be talks by experts from Canada\, and dramatic performances. \nMidland Ancestors is assisting Balsall Heath History Society with this event. SUMMARY:Birmingham: Oral History at The Hive
DESCRIPTION:Oral History at The Hive\nThe Hive is jointly home to Worcester Records Office and The University of Worcester. \nMaggie Tohill our speaker is an archivist with the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service and is one of the Oral History Society’s regional networkers for the West Midlands area. Maggie will look at how family historians might use oral history recordings to provide a wider social context for the life and times of their ancestors\, for example using recordings which cover events they have lived through\, trades/occupations they have followed and places they have lived. \nMaggie will deal with the pluses and minuses of using oral history in this way and suggest where members might look for suitable existing collections both locally and nationally.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Winterbourne House Archives
DESCRIPTION:Winterbourne House Archives\nAn Edwardian historic house and garden nestled in a leafy corner of Birmingham\, just minutes from the city centre\, Winterbourne House was built in 1904 as the family home for John and Margaret Nettlefold. It was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of Edwardian times. Under the ownership of a number of families since the Nettlefolds left in 1919\, eventually bequeathed to the University of Birmingham it was in 2010 restored to its former glory. \nOur speaker tonight Henrietta Lockhart\, is the Collections Officer and will share with us the special objects\, photographs and documents contained within the Winterbourne Archives and some of the interesting family connections which have come to light during research into the Nettlefold family.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: AGM followed by "Birmingham Photo Archive"
DESCRIPTION:Corals Birmingham photo archive\nOur speaker writes “Back in 2013 we began working on something special. In partnership with the Library of Birmingham we developed Corals\, a web platform designed to deliver its collections to digital audiences. Since then we’ve been busy growing Corals to enable other organisations to join us. \nIn this talk we’ll share with you the journey we’ve been on to develop the platform. We’ll discuss its origins\, our rationale for developing it and its core functions. Along the way we’ll focus on the need for archives\, libraries and museums to use technology to engage new users. We look forward to seeing you there!” \nMatthew Jelfs will tell us all about the project. \n  \nAGM\nDo not be put off by the AGM also being at the time of this meeting. At Midland Ancestors\, the record time for the AGM is about 7 minutes. It is hoped this will be broken this evening.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Herbert Mowle Kendal
DESCRIPTION:The curious case of Mr. Herbert Mowle Kendal\nA presentation by Paul Handford MBE. \nThis talk\, snowed off from last year\, is about a Mr Kendal\, a civilian volunteer ambulance driver who was killed in Action in May 1918 whilst driving his ambulance in support of the French Army. Paul discovered his  death was not recorded or indeed recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Thereby commenced a five year journey of research\, which included translating French War Diaries\, examining records contained at the International Red Cross (Geneva) and other research material. His findings  were submitted to the CWGC  for scrutiny and accepted. Mr. Kendal will now be the first ever civilian casualty to be commemorated on a CWGC War Memorial. \n  \nDo please note that this meeting is not on the usual Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon

SUMMARY:Birmingham: From Chisel to Cloud - The Kingsley Norris Lecture
DESCRIPTION:From Chisel to Cloud\, The Past and Future of Family History.\nA thought-provoking journey through thousands of years of development of family history record keeping and record preservation. Not all technology over the millennia has changed and\, surprisingly\, the future is not entirely digital. You’ll see your own family history research and documentation in a new light. \nA presentation by Sharon Hintze\, late Director of the London Family History Centre\, currently based at The National Archives at Kew. She is a frequent speaker and occasional writer on family history and a fifth generation family historian with Midlands ancestry. \n  \nIt was from a germ of an idea of Dr. \n  \nDo please note that this meeting is not on the usual Wednesday evening but a Saturday afternoon

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Victorians and the Christmas Season
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk looks at the influence of the Victorians on Christmas as we know it today. The Victorians repackaged older traditions and customs that suited their new sensibilities\, ideas and concerns. It is said the Victorians:‘mixed the ingredients of the English Christmas to create an extremely rich plum pudding’. Many of these changes took place early in Victoria’s reign\, including the arrival of the Christmas Card\, the Christmas Cracker and new-found popularity of the Christmas Tree. We will explore why and how the Victorians re-energised and transformed the festive season. \nSpeaker: Danny Wells
