SUMMARY:Birmingham: Society Conference and AGM
DESCRIPTION:Family History Day incorporating Annual General Meeting\nAn All day event with Speakers Dr Penny Walters and Doreen Hopwood.\nProgramme Timings – \n09.30 – Doors Open & Registration\n10:00 – Welcome\n10:15 – Presentation by Dr. Penny Walters\, topic – Demystifying DNA\n11:15 – Coffee Break\n11:45 – AGM – Details Click here – AGM\n12:30 – Lunch Break\n14:00 – Presentation by Doreen Hopwood\, topic – Records of Childhood\n15:00 – Closing Words (Chairman/President)\n15:15 – Disperse \n\nDr Penny Walters – Title: Demystifying DNA\nHave you done a test and you’re not sure what the results mean? Or\, are you not sure whether to even do a DNA test? Haven’t there been some scandals surrounding them? What would the benefits of doing a DNA test be when you’ve already done a thorough paper trail?\nWhen our speaker got her DNA test results back a few years ago\, she didn’t understand the jargon and the statistics\, and the implications of the results were lost on her. Different DNA testing companies test slightly different things\, each company has its own advantages and disadvantages\, and different useful extra tools\, so which test is best for your research? Mixing DNA results with a paper trail will be explained. Maybe you were adopted and would like some help potentially looking for biological relatives. This presentation will walk you through the initial stages of understanding your DNA test results. Ethical dilemmas will also be discussed. This session will take a bottom up approach to demystifying some of the jargon\, and implications of doing a DNA test for genealogical purposes. \nDr. Penny Walters has been a University lecturer for 35 years\, currently teaching Masters’ Business studies at Bath Spa University\, England; and previously undergraduate Psychology and Ethics. Penny’s interest in genealogy started after having her first baby and then wondering about her biological parents\, as she was adopted. Penny has six mixed race children\, who have all enjoyed discovering their roots through DNA ethnicity results. \n  \nDoreen Hopwood – Title: Records of Childhood\nThe concept of childhood has changed dramatically over time. This presentation explores the changing perception and experiences of childhood from the 16th Century and discusses some of the many sources available to discover records relating to our ancestors’ formative years.\nDoreen Hopwood was the genealogist for the City of Birmingham for over 20 years and has been carrying out family history research since the 1970s. Doreen enjoyed teaching family\, social and community history at all levels from absolute beginners to postgraduate and is an Honorary Research Associate at the University of Birmingham. Doreen has been a genealogical “agony aunt” by answering reader’s questions for genealogical periodicals and has taken part in the celebrity “Who Do You Think You Are?” for the BBC. \n\nThe society Family History Centre will be open at times during the day. \nNote this is the second Saturday in the month rather than the first Saturday

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Heroes and Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:Heroes and Ghosts\nSpeaker: Michael H Hallett\nWing Co Harold Blackburn MC AFC Public Domain via Wiki Media Commons\nHeroes & Ghosts is the story of Michael’s grandfather Harold Blackburn\, a pioneer aviator before World War I and war hero. After the war\, scandal struck the family and plunged it into shame for three generations. Along the way\, his story was lost\, his memorabilia buried for decades. \nThis  presentation brings the story of his amazing career to light through the recognition of unconscious shame affecting multiple generations. Shame affects the way memories are carried in a family\, both in terms of what is remembered — or allowed to be remembered — and in terms of what mementos survive. Researching such events requires a softer approach than conventional\, data-driven genealogy. While telling this story Michael share tips and techniques that are useful for all genealogists.

SUMMARY:Birmingham: For the Sake of the Empire - Kingsley Norris Memorial lecture
DESCRIPTION:Note Change of Date (was 3rd Feb) due to Rail Strike. \nFor the Sake of the Empire\nPresenter – Peter Middleton\nA Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone in Witton Cemetery marks the last resting place of a Canadian soldier. He had\, in fact\, been born only two miles away in Witton Lane\, Handsworth. This is an attempt to provide an account of his life experiences (1879-1918) viewed against a family and social background which led him to take a leap into the unknown. Peter in his talk seeks to understand why James McNab took the decision in 1903 to leave his family behind and emigrate to Canada for a promise of a free grant of 160 acres of land. You will hear how Canadian resources\, especially census returns were able to provide the means to pin-point exactly where he farmed. Learn how military records were able to provide a great deal of logistical information and help reveal the poignant details leading to a life of promise being tragically cut short. \n  \nThe Kingsley Norris Memorial Lecture is always by a society member.\nIt was from a germ of an idea of Dr. Stuart Kingsley Norris\, retired surgeon at Birmingham Eye Hospital\, that BMSGH now Midland Ancestors\, was established in 1963. As its pioneering founder member\, after his untimely death in 1972\, this annual lecture was set up in his memory. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Royal Warwickshire Regiment 14-18 In Books & Cartoons
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Warwickshire Regiment 1914-1918 Books and Cartoons\nPresenter – Paul Jaques and David Vaux\n  \nD. C. Harries\, Public domain\, via Wikimedia Commons\nMen from the RWR played a major role on the Western Front in WWI. The regiment lost 11\,610 men; six were awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery. Paul and David’s presentation and display will raise our awareness of the wealth of printed material available to family history researchers. This takes us beyond the bare facts in official records to gain an insight into the contemporary experiences\, feelings\, and memories of not only those who served but also the impact upon their families\, neighbourhood and society. \nPaul and Dave have a keen interest in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and Birmingham in both wars. Dave has been exhibiting since 1994 and Paul joined him in 2014 at the start of the First World War Centenary. Paul & Dave have exhibited at the city Museum and Art Gallery\, Birmingham University\, the Oratory\, schools and church and community halls locally and further afield. In 2014 with their help\, Dave’s old school\, now Tudor Grange Academy Kingshurst\, built a trench in their Outdoor Learning centre. A website followed and numerous school groups have toured the trench. \n  \nTaking place in the BMI\, the Dickens Room on the first floor.\n  \nFollowed by Festive refreshments\n  \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: Birmingham Middlemore Emigration Homes
DESCRIPTION:Due To Unforeseen Circumstances a Change of Date and Speaker\nThe Birmingham Middlemore Emigration Homes between 1873 and 1954\nStories of the Lost Children. A Presentation by Val Hart.\nVals presentation is about the work of the Middlemore Homes in Birmingham who emigrated over 5000 children to Canada and Australia between 1873 and 1954. SUMMARY:Birmingham: In Memoriam - Records Of Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:New Date Due to Industrial Action on the railways\nIn Memoriam – Records Of Commemoration\nPresenter Doreen Hopwood\nAs family historians\, we follow our ancestors from the cradle to the grave and this presentation explores the many ways in which the memory of our ancestors has been kept alive.  It explains how to locate their final resting places and discusses the changes in funeral and mourning practices as well as the iconography of gravestones and memorial inscriptions.  It includes records generated by the Church\, State and organisations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and shows how Britons who died abroad may have been memorialised in this country. \nDoreen will be known to many West Midland members having been the genealogist for Birmingham City Council for over twenty years and a tutor in family\, community and social history at all levels. She takes a particular joy in her role for family history publications as a genealogical “agony aunt” answering reader’s questions and helping them to break down their brick walls. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\nNote this is the time of year when we change from Wednesdays to Saturdays \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry
DESCRIPTION:The Role of Women in Medieval Heraldry – The Peplow Memorial Lecture\nSpeaker: Dr. Paul A. Fox\nEarly heraldry at a superficial level appears to have been a very masculine affair\, but women played a much more important role than has been generally recognised.  Moreover\, the frequency with which maternal arms (or elements thereof) were inherited has been under-estimated. Such transmission can provide vital clues for pedigrees. This presentation will include some long forgotten curiosities in the way that women formerly distinguished their personal arms from those of their husbands and fathers. \nPaul is an heraldist\, genealogist\, medievalist writer\, historical researcher\, lecturer and Editor of The Coat of Arms magazine. \n  \nThis will be a face to face meeting \, unfortunately it is not possible to have Zoom as part of it.\n  \nWilliam Augustus Peplow\nGus as he was known was a successful business man from the Black Country and descended from a long line of clockmakers. He had a keen interest in Heraldry\, which he helped develop in the society\, also making authoritative surveys of the hatchments of Worcestershire. He later became President of the Worcester Archaeological Society and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. After his demise in 1983 this annual lecture was set up in his memory. \n

SUMMARY:Birmingham: On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers
DESCRIPTION:On the Trail of The Pilgrim Fathers – CANCELLED\nSpeaker: J Keith Cheetham \nThe Pilgrim Fathers stand out in history as the best remembered of all American colonists and over one million North Americans count them as their ancestors. The Pilgrims were the first group to found their own colony and run it on a system of administration and obedience which was the forerunner of the established American tradition of government. Yet who were these people and from where did the name ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ originate? \nKeith traces their story from various parts of England\, first to Holland then on their epic journey to the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. \nPreviously planned for March 2019\, rescheduled due to CV 19 \nNote that this meeting is on a Saturday afternoon. \n

DESCRIPTION:Spread the Net Wider and Dig Deeper.\nSpeaker: Ann Simcock\nWhen we first begin to research our families often the aim is to try and get as far back as possible adding names and dates with a hope to find a link to someone famous. However\, our ancestors were living breathing human beings with fascinating stories\, both happy and sad. By using basic records and extracting every fact and hint and extending our research  to include people and places involved with our ancestors\, their stories can be discovered and a better understanding of our past revealed.
