SUMMARY:Kenilworth: CHANGE OF PROGRAMME: 'Marriage law and practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900'
DESCRIPTION:Our scheduled speaker\, Richard Churchley\, would prefer to give his talk live\, rather than via Zoom. We will therefore be postponing his talk\, ”My Churchley Family’ – From 1300 – 2019: A typical West Midlands Family’ to another date. \nInstead\, we are very pleased to announce a returning speaker: \nMarriage law and practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900\nA talk by Professor Rebecca Probert \n‘The Marriage Act 1836 laid the foundations of the modern law of marriage. It introduced the possibility of marrying in a registered place of worship or register office\, brought Jewish and Quaker weddings within a new legal framework\, and introduced a system of civil registration for all marriages\, including those celebrated according to Anglican rites. \nNonetheless\, it cannot be assumed that all couples were able to marry as they chose under the 1836 Act. How a couple could marry depended on local factors\, and how they navigated the options available to them can tell us a lot about what they valued. \nIn this talk Professor Rebecca Probert will review the take-up of the options introduced by the 1836 Act\, with a particular focus on the Midlands\, explain the constraints that might determine couples’ choices\, and identify the clues that lie within the marriage certificate itself.’ \nAn Online event using Zoom. Registration is now OPEN \nYou can register by using this link: Marriage Law and Practice in the Midlands\, 1837-1900 \nAll registrants will be acknowledged within about 24 hours. \nRegistration closes at 12 noon on the day of the meeting. \nMeeting times are prompt\, please allow yourself good time\, especially if you’re using Zoom for the first time. \n“Doors Open” at 7:00pm for 7:30pm start. \nVisit this page to find out how we do it. \nAll registrants will be acknowledged with joining instructions included. \nAll Midland Ancestors presentations are the intellectual property of the speaker presenting.
